Tree Removal Cost Breakdown

There is a reason we pay others to perform work that we normally don’t do ourselves. When handling tree removal there is a cost that goes with it and the majority of the time it is well worth it. As I sit here on my porch I can see 2 trees that have to be removed. By the way it is really warm to be late February being 74 degrees at 8pm. Anyway back on point.

Some of the major influences with a tree cutting service making a quote for a removal job has to do with size and location of the tree. If the tree is close to a structure as well as the size for removal. I am a firm believer that people pay for peace of mind. If you have no experience with removing trees then cutting down a tree next to your house is probably not the way to learn. You hire a good reputable landscaping company to do the work for you. Don’t let this happen:

Recently we had a very nasty series of storms come through and it caused heavy tree damage throughout our neighborhood. One of our neighbors took some heavy tree damage which actually knocked their mobile home slightly off the foundation. (Just FYI the tree was only a 1.5 foot thick southern yellow pine.) About two days after the storm here came the people looking for some quick money. They wanted $700 dollars to cut and remove the tree. Of course they tried to play on the fear of other trees could fall which brought their price up even further.

Thankfully my neighbors called me up the driveway to consult for them. After all was said and done the group of tree cutters did not perform any services and did not receive any money.

Instead I hired a guy that was insured which would cut that tree down for around $400 dollars. The sad thing is those guys were trying to save money on the tree removal cost and did it themselves. Now that little cost cutting is going run them a $3,000 or more bill.
Before we look at some additional tips to help save money for tree removal lets talk about some of the reasons why a tree needs to come down.

  • The first reason is because the tree has been damaged or is dying. Don’t wait until the tree is fully dead because it may come down on it’s own and cause serious damage or injury.
  • The anchor soil is not firm and has become loose. This is common with underground streams and sandy soil areas.
  • The tree has a disease. There are a lot of diseases that can affect trees and can even spread. If you are unsure you may need to speak with a tree surgeon to confirm if a tree is sick and if the disease can spread.

There are some other reasons but for the most part those are the common reasons outside of landscape design.

I am fortunate enough to live in the country where there are no burn laws. Paying for a tree to be taken down is one thing but you can shave off some of the cost by doing the cleanup yourself. We normally stack the wood and use it in our fireplace or if it is a resin species we simply burn it at a camp fire. For those that are closer to the city make sure you check out your local burn laws before doing so. If you can’t burn you can stack the wood up and put a notice on craigs list about free wood. If it is a hard wood you can even sell it to local wood turners.

Bottom line is that the tree removal cost is always going to be there whether you do it or not. If you pick a company to do it then they need to make money in order to keep the company open, but remember they don’t need to get rich off of you.

Well it is getting a bit late and time to go but remember if you are going to spend the money for a tree removal service at least pick a good company that is covered by insurance and has a good reputation. Also I hope that tree removal video shows you why there is a need for professionals to do the job.

Cost of Removing a Big Tree

The majority of my tree removal cost came down because I was re-selling the lumber to the company that did the work. However I have now come up against another situation that may happen to more people along the way.

In Alabama we have this wonderful tree called a sweet gum. If you have been down south you know exactly what tree I am talking about. They are the one that drop those sticky little balls all over the place. Well the situation that I am up against is that there are not enough trees on this property to help reduce the cost of the tree removal. Currently I have 2 trees that need to come down.

The first tree is a sweet gum tree. Height is about 90 feet tall with about 10 circumference. The problem with this tree is that the ground that it is on is wet sandy soil and the tree is in falling distance of the house on the property. I have already had one tree go down in this area due to some winds so this needs to be taken care of.

The second tree is a thin leaning pine tree. It just needs to come down because it is leaning and leaning towards the house. Usually I could handle topping the tree and bringing it down myself but the lean is to much for me to handle. So need to have the same crew bring that down as well.

So after a few quotes (which were free by the way) I am going to pick a local business that handles heavy duty landscaping. There are a few points as to why they were picked. Number one was they were insured and bonded to do the work. Secondly to help with the tree removal cost I am waiting until they are in the local area and can just swing by after another job they are doing. This helps them out because they don’t make a trip out here just for me. The third reason was they own their own machinery to handle the job.

One more tip that is helping to reduce the cost is that I have requested once the trees have been brought down for them to be left. I have found some local wood turners that will pay me for the wood. So it is a win win situation.

After all is said and done I will take a tree removal cost of about $450 and bring that cost down to about 150 after savings and payment for the wood. The work will be done by a professional and insured company and at theend of the day the work will be done and I will have a good peace of mind.

Tree Removal Tips to Get Better Prices

Let’s take a look at what we can do to help you save money when you are looking at some tree removal prices.
Most people including myself initially think that there is nothing to bringing down a tree. If you were to cut down a tree in the middle of the woods then that might not be an issue. However as I have found out (the hard way) it is not as simple to remove a tree from your yard. Before we get into the best prices and cost let’s take a look at some of the risk that we have to deal with.

Risks: These are things that can affect tree removal.

  • Personal Injury – A slip of the chainsaw or branches to trees hitting you.
  • Property Damage – Man this one can get nasty. I took a tree down one time and the indention that it left behind actually broke my waterline. That cost me several hundred dollar to repair. The tree could crush cars or even total your home.
  • Neighbor Property Damage – This one can be just as bad. It is the same as property damage but the difference is that you are now open for a lawsuit.

So understanding some of the risks involved it starts becoming clear why there are services that come in and handle the tree removal. That does not mean the risk is gone but it does mean that you are no longer responsible for what happens when your cutting down a tree. So if you are looking to hire someone to cut down and remove your trees here are some of the things you need to be mindful of.
Tree Service Professional

  • Fully Licensed – This means that the company has their respective business and tree service license.
  • Insured – Most professionals will be insured. If they are not insured walk away.
  • Experience – Just below the license and insurance they need experience. This is usually indicated by how long the company has been open.
  • References – Make sure they have some references that you can contact. This is a good time to ask about the quality of their work.
  • Free quote – A tree service company that charges you for a quote is not a good company. The one that gives the free quote is the one that lets his work make the profit.

So now we get down to the price section. Please be mindful that every location is a bit different in their cost. Keeping that in mind will help with the information that I am about to give you. Most of the companies will also offer additional service which I will talk about as well.

Tree Removal cost

Felling the tree only: $50 -$200
Felling and removal of the tree: $100-$300 (This can be cheaper if they can resell the wood which can give you a low cost.)

Anytime you add risk into the picture it will increase your cost because it typically will increase the company’s cost. I have seen upwards of $10,000 dollars to remove a tree. Granted it was a very large tree and the landscaping company had to use a crane. Additional services that you may come across with these companies are Landscape design, Pruning shrubs and bushes, tree trimming and various garden services.

To sum all this up be careful if you decide to remove a tree yourself. The results may not be what you want them to be. If you decide the best thing would be to hire a company to do it for you be sure you check them out. Even if your best friend referenced them. If they are not insured then you might as well have done the damage yourself because it will come back to you.
